How to Choose a Microscope Camera

Microscope cameras are available in a range of formats and specifications, allowing the ideal choice to be selected based on the application, whether its for routine documentation or advanced research imaging.

Resolution

Output image width and height. Applications such as fluorescence imaging often have lower resolution to accommodate larger pixel sizes, however documentation and teaching applications typically favour higher resolutions (for example 12-20 megapixels).

Colour type

Monochrome cameras provide improved sensitivity and are often preferred for low light or fluorescence applications.

Pixel size

Low light applications require larger pixel sizes. Depending on the sensitivity required, pixel sizes above approximately 5 microns are often preferred.

Frame rate

Higher frame rate allows faster image refresh times during live observation (or slow motion etc). This can improve usability and provide clearer observation in applications such as live cell imaging, where real- time visual feedback is important.

The physical size of the camera, often measured in inches. Appropriate sensor size is usually determined by optics of your microscope, whether integrating into an existing or newly configured setup.
